About Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida Gulf Coast University, commonly known as simply FGCU, is a coeducational public university located in Fort Myers, which is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, in the US state of Florida. During the 2008 census, Fort Myers’ population was estimated at a number of more than 65 000 inhabitants, more of whom were living in the metropolitan area – over 593 000.


FGCU was established in 1991, by then-governor Lawton Chiles, but the site of the university was not chosen until one year later, the construction lasting until 1995. The first classes were held in August 1997, in the same month, but one year later, the university completing its first phase of student housing.


According to the Princeton Review, FGCU is among the top 301 business schools in the country, over the past years, the university being highly ranked by other significant education-related magazines, as well. FGCU is divided into 6 colleges, through which it offers its students various degrees in diverse fields of study, currently expanding its graduate offerings and adding to its research capabilities, with an Environmental Forensics Facility.


The athletic teams from FGCU are known as the FGCU Eagles, who compete in NCAA’s Atlantic Sun Conference, since 2006, when the university gained membership, in various sports, including baseball, men’s basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, softball, volleyball, women’s basketball and several other sports. The baseball team has won the Atlantic Sun Conference two years in a row, but has not been allowed to compete in the post season due to the two year NCAA reclassifying period.
